IELTS-Blog::Strategies that helped Vandana get Band 8 in IELTS

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::Strategies that helped Vandana get Band 8 in IELTS Strategies that helped Vandana get Band 8 in IELTS Posted: 29 Aug 2014 03:30 AM PDT Vandana is a lovely lady and one of the winners in our monthly IELTS results competition. When we asked what strategies were responsible for her beautiful score (Listening 9, Reading 8.5, Writing and Speaking 7, Overall Band 8), here is what she said: “I am delighted to know that I have been chosen as a winner in the IELTS competition. I would like to extend my gratitude to www.ielts-blog.com for keeping me updated and motivated for the test. The experiences that students shared on your site were very helpful. I also found useful the writing task samples with estimated scores. They were very informative and I learnt the key tips about how to convert a normal 6 band writing task to a 7 or higher band one. A piece of advice for the test takers: 1. Reading test I would like to recommend the strategy that I followed – one should read the topic of the passage, then get a gist of it by reading the first line of each paragraph and thereafter switch to questions to understand what exactly he/she has to find while reading the complete passage thoroughly. Secondly, one must carry out exhaustive practice of reading IELTS test targeted passages to acquire the required speed of surfing through paragraphs and understanding the overall picture as well. The more you practice, the more you recognize what type of mistakes you are prone to, and thereafter you can try to overcome them. FOCUS or CONCENTRATION are the keys to success in the reading section while speed and analyzing ability are additional essentials. I scored 8.5 in Reading by following this strategy. 2. Listening test Listening tasks are easy but tricky at the same time. Watch English movies which involve different accents and listen to as many practice audio tests as possible. If you neglect this section thinking that you are too cool to practice in listening to English then you may have doomed yourself to a poor score. This is because this section tests your concentration, attention and accent comprehension, simultaneously, as a listener. Practice all different types of questions and identify your weak spots. For example I faced problems with picture or diagram questions as I used to lose track of the recording and get confused. One should try to behave as a person who doesn’t have his own brain and just follows what is being said because sometimes your own extra thoughts make you miss answers and harm your chances to score higher. I scored a perfect 9 in the Listening and I believe the main reason was a calm mind where no other sound but the audio recording voice echoed. One must be very attentive and sorted enough before starting the Listening test. The questions are fairly simple but mostly lack of self-concentration causes errors. So, prepare smartly! 3. Speaking test Again, watch some good English movies. Rectify your pronunciation and develop enunciation! Try not to fumble too often or repeat sentences. Stay calm and confident. Answer and speak naturally. Sometimes people try to be pretentious and then mess up with questions giving senseless answers. Of course, they do not test your intelligence but definitely your sense of understanding, analysis and ability to convert thoughts into words. While good VOCABULARY, versatile description of ideas and fluency are three most important things to remember, confidence and convincing naturalness are the plus points. Moreover, if you make a mistake in understanding a question or replying to it, don’t hesitate to correct yourself as soon as you realize and move on without any tension. It happened to me, but I was happy to know that I still received a Band 7. 4. Writing test For this section, I would say www.ielts-blog.com writing samples are beneficial! They have organised the answered sample tasks well, grouped by Band score, which helps you to compare your own writing abilities and predict your current score. Thereafter, one can see the answers of higher band scores to find what is missing in his/her style of writing and improve accordingly. I had practiced very little for this section but ielts-blog.com helped me to fetch a decent score of 7. Vocabulary, diverse ideas and extensive expressiveness are vital to be incorporated in your writing skills. Fluency and grip of the topic are also equally important. In this section, one should try to understand the topic first, then frame points to be written in the answer and then build up systematically the full body of passage in a step-wise manner. Read as much sample answers as you can and pick useful ideas. Again, concentrate on main ideas of the questions and try to mention all key points while explaining your context. Support your answers with suitable examples and comparisons wherever necessary and be very descriptive as well as convincing with profound thoughtful reasoning. Rest, PRACTICE hard, Stay COOL and DO it!” Related posts: Interesting techniques that helped Sathiyaseelan get Band 7.5 in IELTS I’d like to share with you today the story of... IELTS-Blog::A smart thing Sina did to increase his IELTS score by 1 whole band instantly

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::A smart thing Sina did to increase his IELTS score by 1 whole band instantly A smart thing Sina did to increase his IELTS score by 1 whole band instantly Posted: 21 Aug 2014 03:30 AM PDT Everyone, meet Sina Borzooei – an IELTS test taker from Iran. Sina is a young man in his 20s, who holds an executive position in a company. His first language is Farsi. Like some of you, Sina took two IELTS tests, Academic and General, just two weeks apart – but his scores were quite different. Thanks to a smart observation and a change Sina made following that, his Writing score went up by 1 whole band (read how he achieved this below). When Sina won in our monthly IELTS results competition we took the opportunity to ask for his best exam preparation tips. Here is what he said: “My sincere thanks for your extraordinary book and website. 1. Practice, practice and practice. It is an old adage, but really well said that “Practice makes perfect”. Every single thing and event can be your teacher: reading a newspaper or an e-book, watching an English movie, listening to the radio, etc. 2. What you have more control over are the Reading and Listening sections, so you MUST do your best in them if you want a good score. Your two other skills will be evaluated by examiners and of course you should do well in them too, but there are other factors interfering with your marks. 3. About the Listening module I should say that the most substantial skill I developed during my practicing for the exam was concentration. Unfortunately the stress during exam can easily kill the concentration and destroy your test, so a lot of practicing under real exam conditions can help. Also using real life materials for practicing can do nothing short of magic. On the test day I thought that I lost a lot of marks in Section 1 (it seemed quite difficult), BUT I continued and controlled my negative thoughts, and imagine this – the result was satisfactory. 4. About the Reading test, 3 years of studying in English helped me a lot, so my advice is read as much as you can. Skimming and scanning can also help to save your time. Time is the most essential factor in the Academic reading passages, but in the General Training ones reading with comprehension and memory can do the magic. A vital lesson for me was: it is good if you know the meaning of words but if you don’t, it does not mean that you lose something and you cannot answer questions. In the beginning it was a bit difficult for me to control my feelings and emotions when I faced vague and unclear word in the passage, but as soon as I realized that this is an obsessive compulsive trait and it can harm my score I started to control it. I know that some of you may think that everything should be perfect while reading the passage and you should understand every single word, but bad news is these thought can have grave consequences for you and good news is it is impossible even for native users. Finally be careful about SPELLING, even very funny mistakes in plural/singular make the answers wrong. 5. In the Writing test begin with Task 2 because it takes more time and it also bears more marks. Your handwriting is very important, more than you could imagine. My handwriting was a bit large so I surely lost 1 mark in my academic test, but in my General test just 2 weeks later I got 7 in writing skills. The only change I have made was I asked for extra paper and I wrote with one line space so they could read! Spelling is extremely important so practice spelling as much as possible and also remember that extensive vocabulary can enrich your writing and also improve your other skills. Write in pencil and try to get used to that. The first paragraph is the most important one because of its impression on the reader, so try to develop it well. Aim to cover exactly what you are asked to, avoid any off-topic writing. Learn some templates and patterns for writing and paragraphing. I used Target Band 7 and some of the present essays in the website. 6. About the Speaking test, I can easily say that think and comprehend in English, listen in English (try to translate whatever people say in your language to English), then first talk to yourself in English, then talk to others. Check the mouth position article on this website and try to cover at least the recent speaking tests topics. For coping with your stress it’s better to ask one of your friends to play the role of examiner; if that’s not possible then using a mirror is a good solution.” Related posts: Here’s what Suku did to score 7.5 in IELTS Suku George comes from India and his first language is... IELTS-Blog::Here’s what Suku did to score 7.5 in IELTS

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::Here’s what Suku did to score 7.5 in IELTS Here’s what Suku did to score 7.5 in IELTS Posted: 13 Aug 2014 03:30 AM PDT Suku George comes from India and his first language is Malayam. This did not stop him, however, from getting a high score (Band 7.5) in a recent IELTS exam. It also put him in a position to win our monthly IELTS results competition, and gave us a chance to meet Suku and ask him what the reasons for his success were. Here is what Suku said: “This is proud moment for me and my family. We are immensely happy to see my name on your website. I would like to share my IELTS learning and exam experience. The books I used were Target Band 7 and IELTS Preparation book published by the University of Sydney. My approach was to do the following: Listening 1. I listened to BBC and CNN news channels.2. Practiced with online content available.3. Closely observed the pronunciation of words in different accents. Speaking 1. I read different English Daily articles and copied all the new words and read the sentence again after understanding the meaning to expand my vocabulary.2. Always conversed in English at home and at work to improve the speaking skills and increase the pace of the conversation. Reading 1. I did lots of reading exercises to improve my time management.2. Given more focus to academic reading where the difficulty level is higher to improve my interpretation skills. Writing 1. I focused on time management.2. Allocated 20 minutes to Task 1 and 40 minutes to Task 2.3. Restricted myself to writing 7 or 8 words maximum per line to make counting the words easier.4. Spared 5 minutes to revisit the contents written.5. Tried to incorporate advanced vocabulary words in my sentences.” Related posts: Tips for IELTS Band 8 from Akshay Deep (competition winner) Akshay Deep is one of the best scorers in September,... IELTS-Blog::Top 10 IELTS books

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::Top 10 IELTS books Top 10 IELTS books Posted: 04 Aug 2014 03:30 AM PDT I am delighted to share the great news – ‘Ace the IELTS’ and ‘Target Band 7’ made it again to the list of Top 10 IELTS Books, published by Test Study Guides website. This was a very nice surprise, and they even created a special badge for us! It’s a big honour to appear on the same Top 10 list with big and well-known publishers such as Cambridge and Barron’s, and I am thankful to all the readers for favouring my books. I feel humbled by the very kind reviews published on Test Study Guides, it is amazing to receive this kind of recognition. Here is what they said about my books (this is the short version, you can read the full reviews here): Target Band 7: IELTS Academic – How to Maximize Your Score “Written by a former IELTS test-taker herself, Simone Braverman’s Target Band 7 is an easy-to-use and easy-to-understand strategic guide to the Academic IELTS. This popular prep book’s overarching goal is to help test-takers reduce the time that it takes to solve typical problems and assist them in avoiding common mistakes. Providing useful tips for content and for techniques, Braverman tackles each of the four sections of the IELTS with concise and helpful advice. Of particular note are the sample exercises provided in the book as well as the materials dealing with topic construction. In addition, one of the most appealing characteristics of this prep book is the clear language and personable writing style that Braverman uses, thereby ensuring comprehension of the multitude of useful techniques she offers for conquering every section of the test. Finally, as an added bonus, the book also features a detailed study plan.” Ace the IELTS: IELTS General – How to Maximize Your Score “For those focusing on the IELTS General Module, this book is a must have. Focusing both on substance and strategy, Simone Braverman’s second book comprehensively covers every module of the test and, even more importantly, provides unique techniques and tips for conquering the actual taking of the test as well. Written in simple and easy-to-understand language, this book is designed to efficiently and effectively improve IELTS General Module scores. While the book itself does not provide sample tests, it does provide links to online practice tests where the skills learned from this book can be practiced. Already used and trusted by countless previous test-takers, this is a simple yet effective book for the IELTS General Module.” P.S. As you probably know, even though practice tests are not included in the books, we do provide them as a free bonus with e-books ‘Ace the IELTS’ and ‘Target Band 7′ – so all our readers have a chance to get a lot of practice while preparing for their exams.
