IELTS-Blog::The winners of IELTS Success Formula Challenge

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::The winners of IELTS Success Formula Challenge The winners of IELTS Success Formula Challenge Posted: 18 Jun 2014 06:32 AM PDT Today is the day we announce the winners of IELTS Success Formula Challenge. Thank you everyone for the overwhelming response – over 80 test takers participated and wrote to us about their problems in IELTS. As much as we tried, it was impossible to cover all of them in two weeks considering our already busy schedule… which is why we decided to DOUBLE the number of winners. Yes, today we’re going to announce 10 winners, instead of the originally intended 5. No doubt every one of them will benefit from IELTS Success Formula. They struggled with IELTS long enough and, I’m sure, have a burning desire to put this exam behind them. So now they only need to apply the Formula and Success will follow! Here are the 10 lucky winnerswhose names came up in the draw: 1. Hong Phuc from Vietnam, who’s taking IELTS to be a postgraduate student. She said: “I have a problem with collecting new vocabulary including idioms, collocations, phrasal verbs, etc. When it comes to jotting them down, it really baffles me how to organize them all correctly, easy for learning, easy for finding and reviewing as well. Besides, arranging a suitable timetable for learning IELTS is quite challenging and confuses me a lots. It requires good timing and an extreme concentration, for which I do not know how to prepare and schedule, since I always lose control of myself and become absent minded.” 2. SungKyung Choi from Korea, who’s taking IELTS for her nursing registration in New Zealand. She said: “I need to get band score 7 before August this year. I came to New Zealand two years ago with my son and husband. I was brave enough to spend my money to do the IELTS test 2 years ago. After that I realized I do need proper preparation to get band 7, but my big problem is I don’t have any resources. Also, I don’t have much time and money to spend and I find myself too distracted after work to study.” 3. Ernest Mba from Nigeria, who’s taking IELTS to apply for Canadian Skilled Workers Program. He said: “I wrote IELTS two times last year but I could not get the required score for Canadian Federal Skilled Workers Program (7.5 in listening, 7 in reading, 7 in writing and 7 in speaking). That was before I discovered IELTS-Blog.com. So in my IELTS preparation this year I have already planned to make use of your materials. My main problems in IELTS preparation are with Listening and Reading. I am unable to listen, understand and at the same time write. Also, I find it difficult to understand some statements because of the ascent of the people talking. My worst problems in reading are the inability to finish answering questions in the time allowed and dealing with filling in blanks.” 4. Melniko Quintos from the Philippines, who said: “I have a problem with time in the Reading test where you really need to read a lengthy passage to get your answer especially if you need to match each passage with a certain topic sentence, and also with True/False/Not Given questions which are confusing. In writing, I’m still struggling with gathering my thoughts on Writing Task 1 topics. The same goes for Writing Task 2, because 40 minutes is really hard to manage. In Listening I have hard time with maps and sometimes struggle to understand the accent. In Speaking the cue card talk makes me nervous.” 5. Jincy Joseph from India, who is a nurse and needs an IELTS score for professional certification. She said: “I have been preparing for IELTS for a few months. I have taken a test two months ago but couldn’t score well. I have problems mainly with writing and speaking and there’s nobody to correct and guide me.” 6. Mike from China, who’s taking IELTS to apply for an English Master’s degree in German universities. He said: “In Reading I really find it is hard to distinguish between ‘False’ and ‘Not Given’, it always confuses me. It is very hard for me to persuade myself to believe in the right answer even when I read the passage over and over again. I would say my reading score mostly depends on how lucky I am, as sometimes if I can understand the main ideas of the passages, then I can make less than 3 mistakes, but most of the time I will have made 8-11 mistakes in the Reading section.” 7. Srinivas Lakshman from India, who needs Band 7 in IELTS to be able to immigrate to Australia. He said: “I have a problem with writing and I wonder whether it’s caused by my poor lexical and vocabulary skills. Perhaps I need to improve these to cross Band 7. I have taken IELTS twice before and ended up scoring 6.5 in Writing both times.” 8. Andrew Naguib from Egypt, who needs an IELTS score to apply for immigration to New Zealand. He said: “My IELTS story began one year ago. I took the test 5 times and I can’t reach my target score, Overall Band 6.5. My big problem is that I can’t develop all of my skills well. For example my reading score stayed at Band 5 in all the exams so far. I start to get disappointed in this test and think I can’t do it.” 9. Syed Ovais Hashmi from Pakistan, who’s taking IELTS to immigrate to Australia. He said: “My biggest problems are with Writing and Speaking. In writing, I face problems in organizing the matter. Also, I am not familiar with a less common vocabulary. In Speaking, I think I have fear of speaking in front of the examiner. I took IELTS 5 months ago and scored 6.0 in Writing and Speaking, but I need at least 7.0 in each of these skills.” 10. Teofana from Romania (currently living in Italy), who is taking IELTS to immigrate to Australia. She said: “I tried the academic module 2 months ago and got 5.5 in Writing. As you can see I have a big problem in the Writing module, I know what I have to write, but I am unable to link my ideas.” Congratulations to all the winners! We will contact you shortly via email to deliver your prizes – digital packages consisting of IELTS Success Formula and five full practice tests with answers. Good luck with your exam preparation, and please keep us informed about your progress! Related posts: Announcing the IELTS Success Formula Challenge If you plan to take the IELTS test in 2014... If you’ve just joined IELTS-Blog today, read about the Challenge here. Today we’re going to deal with a problem that troubles a whole group of our readers. Srinivas L. from India needs Band 7 in Writing to be able to immigrate to Australia (he already got 7′s for his other skills). Srinivas says: “I have a problem with writing and I wonder whether it’s caused by my poor lexical and vocabulary skills. Perhaps I need to improve these to cross Band 7. I have taken IELTS twice before and ended up scoring 6.5 in Writing both times.” Hazar T. from Syria needs at least Band 7 in Writing and an Overall Band 7.5 by August. She keeps scoring 6.5 in Writing and has no idea why, or how to improve. Hazar says: “I took Academic IELTS 3 times, in 2005, 2013 and 2014, I got scores ranging from Band 7.5 to 8 for Speaking, from 7 to 7.5 for Listening, but only 6.5 for Writing”. Mohamad T. from Indonesia is in the military service and needs Band 7 for his Command and Staff course, and also for his Master’s degree. He says: “I have just received my IELTS Result and I got 5.5 in writing. I am really curious is this because my writing method is unacceptable in IELTS or due to some other reason? I really need you advice.” Erika A. from the Philippines is an International Educated Nurse, currently living in Canada and trying to complete her professional registration in the new country. She says: “I’ve been struggling to achieve the required IELTS score. I tried IELTS twice already but still I can’t reach the target score. I feel so frustrated about it, and I need your help. My scores are acceptable in Listening and Reading but I always had a hard time in Writing and Speaking where I should get Band 7 for each, but I only got 6/6.5. I need to know more tips and strategies and more practice.” Alyona T. from Uzbekistan needs Band 7 in IELTS to do a Master’s degree in the university she has chosen. Alyona says: “I have been studying for more than half a year, and finally I got Band 6 in Academic IELTS which is OK, but not enough for my aim and my satisfaction. …It’s quite hard for me to differentiate between essays of Band 6, Band 7 and Band 8″ The one thing these test takers have in common is – they don’t know how to respond to IELTS writing tasks in order to get their target score. They need to understand what exactly they should change in their writing to get a higher score. How IELTS Success Formula can solve their problems with Writing Anyone who wants to improve their writing needs to understand first what is wrong with the way they are writing at present, so that they can do better in the future. This is why in IELTS Success Formula we take a Writing Task 1 that would score about 5.5 or 6 in a real exam, and explain why it would get such a score. But instead of looking only at the Overall Writing score we go over the four criteria (Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy) and explain what score this task would get for each criteria, and why. Look at this sample and you will see how that’s done. And we don’t stop there – we take this Writing Task 1 response (that would score no more than 6 in its current form), and we re-write it for Band 7. Is that it? No we take it to the next level and rewrite it to get Band 8 (see a sample here). But what about an essay, the more important Writing task? We go through the same stages, completely analyzing a sample essay and explaining why it would score Band 6.5 in its current form. Then we rewrite it to score Band 7, and once again for Band 8. After you’ve gone through this explanation in the book and understood how your Writing is being marked in IELTS – you will know what kind of writing to aim for, if you need Band 7 or 8. IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 6

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 6 IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 6 Posted: 13 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Welcome to IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 6. If you’ve just joined IELTS-Blog today, read about the Challenge here. Today we’re going to deal with two related issues in IELTS Speaking. The first one presents a problem for Dr. Sherif Magdi from Egypt. To be able to work in the UK he needs to get an overall IELTS Band score of 7.5 with at least 7 for each skill. Here is what Dr. Sherif finds especially difficult in his IELTS preparation: “I have a real problem with the IELTS test especially the expressive modules (speaking and writing). Although I graduated from medical school where all the study materials were in English but it was particularly medical English with very simple English sentences. I was expressing myself using a simple vocabulary and had not performed well in the mock exams. What made it much harder that the GMC had raised the minimal accepted IELTS score for registration to 7.5 overall score with a minimum of 7 in each module. I don’t know what to do to improve my ability to hit this score.” The second one makes Sajjad Anwar Khan’s life difficult. He wants to immigrate from Pakistan to Canada, and must have a good IELTS score to get a visa. His exam is just around the corner, in July, and here is his main problem: “I have a problem in Speaking. When I have to speak on a given topic for a specific time, I always face difficulty with putting together ideas and vocabulary in a short time. I need an advice/tip how to quickly gather ideas in a shortest time and deliver a response in a better, more organised way”. How IELTS Success Formula can solve these two Speaking problems When your speaking is judged in IELTS, there are 4 criteria used to assess it: 1. Fluency and Coherence2. Lexical Resource3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy4. Pronunciation. But what exactly does that mean? It means your assessor is looking at 1. How much do you hesitate, how appropriate and full are your answers, how do you link your ideas?2. What range of vocabulary are you using, and how flexible are you in your choice of words?3. How accurate is your grammar, and are you able to use different sentence types?4. How easy is your pronunciation to understand, and how well are you using intonation and pauses when you speak? As you can see, vocabulary makes only 25%, a quarter of your Speaking score, so focusing ALL your attention on it is a mistake. You also need to speak fluently, link ideas well, keep grammatical errors to the minimum, and pronounce words correctly to raise your score. In IELTS Success Formula we give you advice and take you through Fitness Activities to cover all of these aspects of your speech. One important thing you will learn is the difference between a low-score response and a high-score response. We show you lots of examples and give particular reasons why response A (for example) is the best and what is wrong with responses B or C – see a sample here. However, vocabulary is one of the common problems, which is why we created a “Top score vocabulary” list, especially for IELTS Speaking – here is a sample. It will help you to raise your score because using occasional phrasal expressions or idioms enriches your vocabulary. Quickly putting together ideas for your speech can be a problem if you’re seeing the topic for the first time in your life, and also if you haven’t trained in doing that in a short time. How should you deal with that? The list of Speaking topics used in IELTS is not endless, and it always pays off to go over the typical ones and think of things to say. In IELTS Success Formula we have a full recording and transcript of a real speaking test (see a sample here) where the test taker is answering examiner’s questions. You can go over it to see how to respond well to the frequently asked questions, and you can also follow our suggestions there how those responses can be improved to get a higher score. A list of IELTS Speaking questions is available on our website, where we post daily questions shared by real test takers shortly after their exams, and of course in IELTS Success Formula we have included a collection of most popular topics with full interview question sets and cue cards for practice. IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS test in Canada and the USA – May 2014 (Academic Module) IELTS test in Canada and the USA – May 2014 (Academic Module) Posted: 12 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Two IELTS test takers from Canada and the USA shared the Writing and Speaking questions from their exams (which were the same in these two countries): Writing test Writing task 1 (a report) We were given a graph showing obesity percentages for men and women in five different years between 1970-2010 in Australia. IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 5

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 5 IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 5 Posted: 11 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Welcome to IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 5. If you’ve just joined IELTS-Blog today, read about the Challenge here. Today we’re going to handle a problem that Anshad M. from India complained about. He is a nurse who needs a work permit for working in English-speaking countries such as UK, Canada and New Zealand. To be able to get his dream job, Anshad needs to deal with the following IELTS issue: “I took my IELTS test a year ago and my Writing module score was pretty low. When I was inside the exam hall, I could not respond to the essay topic properly. The topic was a two way discussion about whether or not creative artists should be supported by the government. Even though the topic was rather simple, I failed to find some rational arguments in the given time and that affected my sentences and brought my score below average. Because of the same reason, Writing Task 1 too didn’t go well. I believe I still may face the same issue in the upcoming examination which I am planning to sit in August and I seek your guidance. How IELTS Success Formula can solve Anshad’s Writing problem Do you know what “drawing a blank” means? It means to be unable to think of something, to be unable to get information. This is what happens when you get a question on the topic you never thought about – and it’s a very, very common problem (you’re not the only one who has it, Anshad!) One part of Anshad’s problem is that he didn’t have enough thoughts on the topic. It can be solved by going over a list of typical IELTS essay tasks in preparation for the exam, and thinking in advance about each and every one of them, to have something to say. We post the latest IELTS topics daily on IELTS-Blog.com, and have a large collection of them, which is constantly growing. Another part of Anshad’s problem is that he didn’t follow a proper essay-writing process. When you know what to do step by step, it helps with managing your time, it helps with writing a good essay and it helps to calm you down, because when you feel in control of the task there is no stress. IELTS Success Formula does exactly that for you – it teaches you the process, explains the essay types you can get in IELTS, it shows you how to handle each essay type, how many paragraphs to write, what should be written in each paragraph, what sentence structure to use to get a higher score, what vocabulary to use, how to link your sentences while developing your viewpoint and more (have a look at this fitness activities sample). In addition the book reveals you 10 secrets how to impress the assessor with your writing, and how to identify in your writing very common weaknesses so you can avoid them. After doing the fitness activities in the book you will find that 35 minutes is enough to write a great essay and will even have 5 more minutes to check your work. Writing reports in IELTS, just like writing essays, can be broken down into steps. By following a simple process you can quickly understand the task, what you’re required to do, gather your thoughts and put them in writing, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, and when finished, give your work an overall check to ensure quality and quickly find the errors. The types of charts and diagrams or maps you can encounter do affect the report you will be writing, but we cover all of them in great detail in IELTS Success Formula. You won’t be caught unprepared if you went through the Writing Task 1 fitness activities in the book (view a sample here). IELTS-Blog::IELTS test in Australia – a change in the order of components

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS test in Australia – a change in the order of components IELTS test in Australia – a change in the order of components Posted: 10 Jun 2014 05:49 AM PDT Today I wanted to alert everyone who is about to take the IELTS test in Australia to a change in the order of components. The official order of IELTS components is as follows: 1. Listening 2. Reading 3. Writing 4. Speaking (sometimes the Speaking test is delivered on the same day with the other 3 tests, and sometimes it is not) However, recently there was a change in the order of the first 3 components in Australia, and the current order is: 1. Writing 2. Reading 3. Listening 4. Speaking (no change) As far as we know at this stage (June 2014) this change was only made in Australia and other countries are unaffected. If you took the IELTS test in another country (not in Australia) and the components were not in the official order, please write to info@ielts-blog.com and let us know, so we can update everyone on the blog. IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 4

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 4 IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 4 Posted: 07 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Welcome to IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 4. If you’ve just joined IELTS-Blog today, read about the Challenge here. Today we’re going to handle the issue that Adriano from Brazil is struggling with. He plans to immigrate to Australia and needs an Overall Band 7 with a 7 in every sub-test for his permanent residency visa. Here’s what Adriano finds difficult in IELTS preparation: “First and foremost, my biggest issue is Portuguese. It’s difficult to use English in my country even though I work in IT and use English technical terms. I noticed my English behaves like a “roller coaster”. In my good weeks I write and speak like a native because I used English a lot, but in my bad weeks my English seems to disappear. Trying to overcome this situation I’m planning to do some classes (they are expensive in Brazil). Second, prepositions… I hate them… It’s likely that in this e-mail I wrote lots of them wrong. I imagine prepositions are important in all IELTS tasks; however, I don’t have a good plan how to fix my errors. Finally, the use of adjectives and adverbs – I know that it’s ‘extremely important’ to use them in essays and perhaps in the Speaking sub-test, but I don’t have a good range of them. Actually, I’ve never seen a GOOD list of “Adjectives and adverbs you should use in IELTS”… I don’t know if it exists.” How IELTS Success Formula can solve Adriano’s Writing problem It looks like Adriano has a good plan in place to practice using English and keep it at a consistent level – so what I am going to address here are his problems with grammar. Prepositions Adriano, you’re having problems with prepositions because the ones used in your native language are different from the ones used in English. And I can safely say the same about ANY language. This is why we have ‘IELTS Writing Doctor’ – a full chapter in our book that tells you everything you need to know about IELTS-specific grammar and vocabulary (not just prepositions). You wanted a good list of adjectives and adverbs to use in IELTS… well, guess what – we have it! You can avoid using the wrong prepositions only if you know what the right ones are. And learning prepositions that go with all the verbs in English is not an easy task, it can take months. But if you know the verbs and expressions you’re most likely to use in IELTS writing, you can learn the frequently used prepositions and achieve a huge improvement in your writing score. Click here to view a few pages on prepositions from IELTS Success Formula (this is just a sample). We cover a lot in this section: how to use prepositions in time expressions, prepositions in statistics, groups/categories, location, common verb forms + prepositions, useful adjectives and prepositions that go with them, and more. Vocabulary The ‘IELTS Writing Doctor’ chapter also covers vocabulary, in particular expressions that help you produce a good Writing Task 1 (view sample here). We suggest a list of expressions to use so your report has the right, formal tone – and we also show the expressions to avoid, if you don’t want to sound unprofessional or babyish. Writing Task 2 is a topic we spend lots of time on in IELTS Success Formula. We give you the vocabulary for all parts of an essay, and we cover all essay types. Using the options from the book you can write a beautiful response that any native English speaker would be proud of (click here to view). Last but not least, we compiled a whole vocabulary on typical IELTS Writing topics, which you can use to achieve a higher vocabulary score – have a look here. IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 3

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 3 IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 3 Posted: 06 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Welcome to IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 3. If you’ve just joined IELTS-Blog today, read about the Challenge here. Today we’re going to deal with a problem that troubles Raminder from India. He must have it solved to be able to further his studies in Australia: “I have a few problems with the Reading sub test. I usually get confused with question types like True/False/Not Given, matching information and completion type of questions. Time management is also a problem, I have never been able to answer all the 40 questions in one hour.” How IELTS Success Formula can solve Raminder’s Reading problem Let me begin by saying that it’s not just Raminder’s problem – our research shows that the majority of IELTS test takers have difficulties with time management in the Reading sub test. This is why we devoted a lot of attention to this issue in IELTS Success Formula – and I quote: “Question. What if I’m almost out of time, and I still haven’t answered all the questions? Answer. This can (and probably will) happen to you during the first practice sessions. The IELTS Reading test is time-intensive, meaning there is a lot of reading and answering in the 60 minutes, and anyone who doesn’t manage their time can end up in this situation. While it’s OK to run out of time at home, in the initial stages of your preparation, try not to let it happen to you during the actual exam. Proper time management will help you avoid such scary moments—please refer to‘7 Fundamentals to Make Your Reading Test a Success’ on page 48.” I will briefly mention here the 7 Fundamentals (because explaining these principles takes quite a few pages in the book): 1. Skim and scan instead of reading word by word Did you know? ‘Skimming’ means reading fast to get the general idea and ‘scanning’ means looking for particular information. In the book we explain in detail which question types require skimming, and which require scanning, and then direct you to fitness activities to practice. 2. Use the text to guide you to the answers This fundamental is talking about a few particular question types that appear in a sequential order in the text. You can save time if you know when you won’t have to go back in the text to find the next answer, you will always be moving forward. 3. Use words from the text There are particular question types that require copying words from the text “as is”, which is a great – because you don’t even have to worry about spelling or grammar. 4. Read in detail only if you have to When you know which question types don’t require reading in detail you can save time by scanning. 5. Pay close attention to task instructions in the test paper If you write correct answers in more words than allowed, you will lose marks. 6. Know when to move on Some questions are just harder than others. Don’t get stuck on a hard question, move on and keep answering the following ones – your score will benefit from this approach. 7. Manage your time To manage your time well in the Academic Reading sub test you basically need to do two things: 1. Allocate a certain amount of time to each passage. Since the first passage is normally the easiest it makes sense to allocate the least time to it, then a bit more time to Passage 2, and even more time to Passage 3. Note: this strategy will work better for people with stronger reading skills, but in the book we also offer an alternative strategy for those who have weaker reading skills. 2. Answer the questions on each passage in the most efficient and accurate way to save time. Because this is important, in IELTS Success Formula we give you techniques for answering the difficult question types quickly and accurately. For example, Raminder mentioned True/False/Not Given questions confusing him. Here’s how we suggest to approach this question type. The basic rule is that that if the statement clearly agrees with text, the answer is True, if the statement explicitly contradicts the text, the answer is False, and if the statement says something that the text doesn’t say, it’s Not Given. It works in a very similar way with Yes/No/Not Given. Also, keep in mind that the answers to True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given questions appear sequentially in the passage. This narrows down the search for you, because once you’ve found the answer to question 1, the answer to question 2 will be somewhere in the sentences that follow, not in the preceding part of the text. IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 2

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 2 IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 2 Posted: 05 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Welcome to IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 2. If you’ve just joined IELTS-Blog today, read about the Challenge here. Today we’re going to solve the problem that Laura P, a pharmacist from Spain, is battling with: “I took the IELTS test about half a year ago and I got Band 6, which is OK, but not enough for my purpose. I am a pharmacist moving to the UK soon and I need to score Band 7 at least in order to have a proper job opening there. I have been studying English really seriously for four years already at the Languages State School and I have made good progress, but not enough to reach Band 7. So, I feel stuck and frustrated because even though I have been devoting time to the task, it seems I will never reach the required proficiency level. I have trouble with all IELTS skills, but what I particularly find tough is the Listening part. I just cannot cope with listening just once and writing down the information simultaneously. I train my ear totally by watching films and doing listening exercises, but I am still having trouble to get the right information after listening just once, even if I try to focus on which type of data is required.” How IELTS Success Formula can solve Laura’s Listening problem To be able to listen and write down the right information a few things are needed. Firstly, writing while listening is an ability one needs to develop. You can use any opportunity to practice – a talk show on the radio, a podcast, a listening exercise you found online, etc. Just listen and make notes on a piece of paper of the most important things that you hear. You can use shorthand writing (such as writing “doc. ord.” instead of “doctor’s orders” for speed, as long as you can decipher your writing afterwards. Secondly, in the IELTS Listening sub test you need to know what you’re listening for. So you need to look ONLY at a small group of questions at a time (not all the questions in the section), as instructed by the recording. For example the recording says “Now look at questions 7 to 10″, so that means you need to quickly read only questions 7 to 10, but not any further. By doing that you are focusing just on the necessary information, you are not getting distracted by other things that aren’t important in the following fragment of the recording. Thirdly, you need know question types really, really well. Pages 3 to 6 in IELTS Success Formula (click here to see) show you the question types and give you an example of each question type, which is good to get started; they also direct you towards which Fitness Activities you should do to practice in answering that particular question type. By studying all the question types you will know in what form the answer will come, and it will be easier to recognize it on the recording. Another thing to keep in mind is that details you hear on the recording are there for a reason. Quoting from IELTS Success Formula, “Any specific information mentioned on a recording, such as names, phone numbers, dates, opening hours, locations, years, colors is usually mentioned for a reason. It is very likely that such details are contained in the answer.” But what to do if you can’t see which question this would be relevant to? Quickly write those details down in the Listening booklet. After the recording has finished, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers from the booklet to the answer sheet, and during that time you can match some of unanswered questions with the details you wrote down during the test. One more hint that helps with IELTS listening is – you don’t need to rewrite or rephrase what you hear when answering a question. Write exactly what you hear, when you hear an answer. Don’t look for a synonym or change the word’s form, don’t lose time doing that, it’s the wrong thing to do. To get more Listening tips, visit the IELTS Success Formula webpage and download a free trial copy (scroll down a bit and look for the download link). IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 1

IELTS-Blog IELTS-Blog::IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 1 IELTS Success Formula Challenge Day 1 Posted: 04 Jun 2014 03:30 AM PDT Today we’re going to solve the problems that trouble Suwandi J. from Indonesia. Here are the issues he is worried about: “IELTS preparation has been a challenge for me before taking the IELTS test. Firstly, I have limited IELTS books for practice. It’s been hard to find original books with complete practice tests. Secondly, I don’t have a qualified tutor who can guide me through IELTS practice. I need a guideline how to exercise well to prepare for the IELTS test. I need to get Band 7.0 in my IELTS (L,S,W,R) but I am very anxious because it looks unlikely if I haven’t got enough practice time with the right resources. I have taken my first IELTS and scored Band 5.0, it was a couple of years ago. And it’s not enough to be accepted in the university where I want to study.” How IELTS Success Formula can solve Suwandi’s problem Limited materials for practice? We’ve got you covered: We know that practice is very important in IELTS preparation, and that is why we included 3 opportunities to exercise: 1. For every IELTS skill – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking – there is a dedicated section in the book, and in every section there are fitness activities (that’s what we call practice exercises in our book because they train your brain and keep it fit and ready for the real test). Want to have a look? Download a few pages as examples of Listening activities here, Reading activities here, Writing Task 1 here, Writing Task 2 here, and Speaking activities here. 2. In addition to the fitness activities there is a full IELTS-like test included in the book, with audio files for the Listening and Speaking sub-tests. We even underlined the sentences in the Listening transcript where the correct answers are – click here to see. 3. And on top of that, we give you 5 (five!) full IELTS practice tests with answers as a free bonus with the book. This means that you can test yourself to find what your weaker skills are, find the common mistakes that you make, work with tips from the book and fitness activities to improve, and then test yourself again to see the progress you’re making. No tutor? No problem! We designed the fitness activities mentioned above to replace a real tutor. Why? Because many test takers live in remote areas and have no access to live IELTS classes. Others live in big cities but are too busy earning a living or taking care of their family to do a class during the day. So, our fitness activities literally tell you what to do, just like a real IELTS tutor would! And, of course, the correct answers are provided, but instead of simply listing them, we also include an explanation where required – click here to see an example.
